My Father's Eyes « Thread Started on Oct 23, 2009, 6:38am »
As my soul slides down to die. How could I lose him? What did I try?
Rico sat at his desk, staring at the phone he had just hung up. The distant sound of the secretary typing on her keyboard could be heard, as if tapping out the seconds that clicked by during the silence. The conversation he had just had with the Chief of Police flashed through his mind over and over again.

"Mr. Alvarez... we have a Carlos Alvarez down here at the station. I know you and your old man live together, so I was just checking to see if he is your father."
"Yes... he's my father. Is he alright?"
"I'm afraid I can't tell you. He's very confused right now, and he couldn't remember where he was headed to or even who he was."
"What....?"
"Does your father have any illnesses?"
"No... none that I know of. Can I talk to him?"
"Afraid not, Mr. Alvarez. You should send someone to come get him... and you may want to take him to a hospital. He might be really sick."
"I'll be right there. Thank you."

"Rico...? Are you alright?" asked his secretary as she hung over him, a worried look in her eyes.
Rico stared at her blankly before recovering from his shock.
"No... I need to leave on an emergency. Will you please cancel all my appointments for today?" he said, standing up quickly and grabbing his jacket off the back of the chair.
"Sure... when should I tell them you will be back?"
"Just direct my calls to Counselor Mendez if it is an emergency. I'm not sure how long I'll be gone." he said as he rushed past her out the door.
Bit by bit, I've realized That he was here with me; I looked into my father's eyes.
The silver Audi came peeling into the parking lot of the Detroit Police Department, causing some people on the street to turn and look. He leaped out of the car, rushing to get to his father. He dreaded what state he would find him in. What was wrong with him? He seemed to be alright this morning. Had he been sick, and Rico had just been too caught up in saying goodbye to Sherice that he hadn't noticed? Guilt overwhelmed him as he thought about it. He never would put his father last. He should have said something to him!
Bit by bit, I've realized That's when I need them, That's when I need my father's eyes.
