( THE RULES ) « Thread Started on Nov 9, 2008, 12:31am »
`in case of emergency break glass!*
I am not going to insult your intelligence and spell out every little thing exactly as every other RPG forum around has. If you're old enough to be here legally, you're old enough to understand what makes a good characters, and forum etiquette. I also trust that you know what will happen if you disrespect staff, spam, or create a Mary Sue of a character. The basic rules are just common sense: Have a quality character, not a perfect one. Don't spam, or disrespect staff. You know the drill. So instead of going on that long spiel, below are just a few basic forum policies.
`the minimum word count there is none!*
Quality versus quantity and all that jazz. Nobody will force you to spit out 1,000 words for a single reply. If you want to write 3,000+ words, great, go for it. But for those with low muse or little time to devote to writing, a good paragraph or two will suffice. While quality is more important than quantity, don't sacrifice one for the other. There is a certain point at which low quantity leads to low quality. Basically, put some thought into your posts, and give others something to reply to.
`what about the censors there are none!*
Anything goes. Real life is not censored. In real life, people swear. They get drunk; they do drugs, and have orgies. We won't stop you from doing whatever you want to your character, so long as it is done in a tasteful manner. And please, no detailed sex scenes. Nobody wants to click on the thread title "O HAI. 8D" and read on to see in detail how Jane and Bob became a family of three.
`original or canon character either will do!*
Original characters are always welcome. While we do have some canons to choose from, you are more than welcome to create a character entirely from your own mind. Don't feel like you have to play a canon anything like that. Your own characters are perfectly fine. The RPG wouldn't be any fun if it were all canons, anyway. Canon and Original characters interacting together is also encouraged. It makes for good plots.
`standardization of posting style third-person past-tense!*
You may align your post however you please (we recommend not centering the entire thing, but whatever), however you must post in story format. (i.e. "Bob walked down the street. "Hi," he said to some random dude". NOT: "*walks down street* Hi.".) Also, your posts must be in third-person past-tense.
`sig and av sizes nothing too big!*
Signatures should not stretch the board. We recommend nothing wider than 450 pixels. And nobody wants to scroll for an hour to read the post below yours, so nothing taller than 250 pixels. As for avatars, you don't have a choice- 100 x 100 or smaller.
`limits of character creation whatever you can handle!*
We're not going to tell you how many characters you can or can't handle. You know your limits, so go with what you know. Don't create ten characters if you only have an hour a week, m'kay? You may also have any combination of males/females and canons/originals, though we do encourage a good balance to keep a decent male/female ratio.
`your character's joining post how to format!*
First of all, make sure you post it in the right place. Submissions is for FINISHED applications only. Pending is for anything that has yet to be finished. Title your thread "LAST NAME, first name", and only that. (i.e.; "SMITH, john") Also, when filling out the application, the information goes AFTER the », after the [/ color] tag. We don't want to see entire personalities/histories, etc. being colored. >_>
`some other random crap because we're lazy!*
We ask that your display name be your character's first/last name (and middle, if it fits; also, title (such as Dr.) if they have one.) (i.e. Dr. Perry Cox, Dr. Gregory House, etc.) Names are to be only text. Punctuation marks are okay, but no more than one, and none of that double-ampersand bullshit. ONLY one character per account. Characters can be no younger than 18 (eighteen). Even 18 is pushing it. This is not a high school RPG. It is meant for adults in adult situations- hence, why we don’t even have a High School as a location for RPing. We encourage people to go beyond what the majority of people are making and make characters that are 25+, but it’s not required. As long as the character is 18+, you’re fine. Most importantly: There will be literacy!
`oh and about aging no being 21 forever!*
As far as aging your character, do so on your own time. We will be changing the season/months on the sidebar at regular intervals- for example, when we say "summer", it's june, july and august, for "fall", it's september, october, and november, and so on and so forth. Pay attention to the "stats" image in the sidebar, as it will tell you what season and months we are in, in-game. You can RP as far back as you want to (so if we've moved on to fall, but your "summer" thread isn't completed, you can continue that thread. But you can never RP ahead of what we have. So if we're officially in summer, you can't RP in the fall. But keep it realistic. And remember, you must age your character at some point, preferably during the season in which their birth month takes place. You can't be 21 forever, you know? This will change on the same day each month.
`so what's the password there isn't one!*
Yeah, we're not bothering trying to hide a password anywhere in the rules. All you'll do is skim for it and not really read anyway, so why bother? But know that ignorance of the rules is not an excuse for breaking them. If you break a rule, you will be punished accordingly, and probably more so if you try to claim you didn't know. It's not our fault you didn't read the rules. It's on you. Make the wise decision, dude.
